A place to rest - Jastarnia

Photos from my one-day road trip to Jastarnia had been waiting to be posted since July. When I finally initiated editing, it hit me that this topic deserves a few more words than I originally planned.
I kind of have no idea how it’s started but I’ve never been a sea person. I really enjoyed sweating up when hiking in the mountains a lot more than lying idle on the piece of sand I had to fight for. After my second year of university, I got a summer job in Jastarnia. Luckily for me, it was in September and just for one month. The beaches were getting emptier and emptier with every weekend and the weather kept being really favorable to me. Eventually, I stated the walk through the beach or watching the paper lanterns during sunset could be quite pleasant. This is the story that tells how I discovered there is a place by the sea that doesn’t make me wonder what is the reason why people consciously travel there but actually makes me rest a lot (in typical grandma style). The last time I visited Jastarnia was in July, however, I still strongly believe September is a perfect time for this kind of trip, so, I find myself excused for posting these pictures with a two months delay. Let’s say it was the plan from the beginning.

Second Skin

I've been fighting with the text for this post for so long that I eventually created a new one. I think it'll be next to publish.
This time the pics have to speak for themselves. I will only add that in my opinion there's no better choice than one piece for the heat. Nothing else.
And no, that day I wasn't dying because of the temperature. Today, I would probably faint right after I left home. And now, let's go sunbathing!

Holidays photo diary

ph. Natalia Lipke

Good morning on the last day of the year! As I promised, today I'm posting the pics that were taken during these holidays. A part of them was shot in Gdańsk, a few hours before my departure for home and the rest presents the nearest surrounding of my house and few photos taken during Christmas days. This is actually the first article with so many pictues. I hope you're gonna like it.
In the meantime, do you have a plan how to spend the last hours of the year? Right now, I'm having this great dilemma about the New Year's resolutions - to do or not to do them? I know from my own experience how unsure investition they are. In my case, completing any of them was on a verge of a miracle and when one actually was completed, it was the effect of a coincidence. I also know, the resolutions sometimes happen to be a fine trigger for action and a shot of extra motivation in critical moments for a quiet large group of people. I guess I need to decide which of these ideologies is closer to my heart by midnight.
For me and my family December 31st isn't just the New Year's Eve. For 19 years we've had also one more reason for celebrating which is my sister's birthday. Forgive me but I can't take this pleasure away from me and I have to write here: HAPPY BITRTHDAY SIS!
I hope in the evening each of you will farewell year 2014 and say hello to the following one when being in your best mood. I wish you all this upcoming year to be at least as good as this one or even better - let's make it a year full of optimism, energy, strength and motivation for action, heads full ideas and enthusiasm for bringing them into life! Happy New Year!

PS. In these ucoming days I'm gonna show you the dress that I'm wearing tonight so expect a new article soon :)

Część z nich powstała kilka godzin przed moim powrotem do domu, jeszcze w Gdańsku, a reszta w najbliższej okolicy mojego domu przed paroma dniami. To w sumie pierwszy wpis, gdzie umieszczam aż tyle zdjęć.

PS. W ciągu najbliższych dni postaram się pokazać Wam moją sukienkę z dzisiejszego wieczora. Spodziewajcie się nowego posta :)

Summer

Beach, palm trees and cocktails. Or backpack, map and comfy shoes. Or garden, smoothie and books. There are various conceptions of how to spend the summer time. Sometimes we plan our fabulous journey to the exotic places a few months earlier, then look forward to the departure time and finally arrive to the dreamy spot. All of that is supposed to be our ‘great escape’ from all the daily routines and we simply enjoy it for a week or two. Another concept might be based on exploring. We pack our backpack with only those stuff we are able to carry and begin a trip focused on seeing places from the point of view of the locals, looking for amazing experiences when getting known with new people  and enjoying local street food. Another vision of summer? Let me picture that for you. Piece of meadow or lawn in your garden or the nearest park or in the woods on the verge of the city, blanket, music and pure relaxation. No need to pack the bags, plan the trip, wasting time on the airports. Instead, an opportunity to use every second of your free time for clearing your mind up, getting peaceful and calm, getting rid of every stressed part of yourself. I could keep mentioning such options and so could you I bet. Though there are some ideas for summer which seem typical, that is an individual question of us, connected with tastes, preferences and possibilities.

Why do I post about it? Because I’m drastically fast getting closer to the middle of my summer break and I assume this seems to be the right time for summing up how I’ve been spending it so far and how I would like to use the rest of it. For recent weeks, what I’ve been doing  has probably most in common with the third option I told you about. Yes, I spend a lot of time in my garden while catching up with all the lectures that had been waiting for me for a while and exploring music new for me. Compiled with a few couple-days trips to places that made me feel fully relaxed, that was a perfect month for me. Maybe I didn’t bring all of my plans to life and didn’t manage to fulfill all the chores I had put on myself but still, the fact that right now I’m the calmest person in the world was worth it. Cause that’s why we need vacation – to get that bliss I’m filled with right now.

Now when I know I’m pretty satisfied with last month there’s the question of the next one. Adventure, satisfaction and joy. Coming back to the sequences of words I wrote at the beginning, these are three words I put in mine. Adventure for one amazing trip I have in my mind. Satisfaction for working on this blog, preparing for the fall semester and improving some projects I aim to realize soon. Joy for keeping on doing stuff I do now – pictures, movies, books, music, cooking, etc. Sounds like a plan to me. I’ll come back to this post in September and check how it worked. Now it’s time for you. Whether you’ve been to your vacation already or not, think of how would you like to spend the rest of summer. What would you like this time to be for you? Give that thought a minute and state your three words J

Plaża, palmy i koktajle. Albo plecak, mapa i wygodne buty. Albo ogród, smoothie i książki. Istnieją dziesiątki koncepcji jak spędzać lato. Czasami kilka miesięcy wcześniej planujemy niezwykłą podróż w egzotyczne rejony, potem z niecierpliwością czekamy na czas wyjazdu, a w końcu docieramy do wymarzonego miejsca.

Przygoda, satysfakcja i radość. To a propos tych krótkich ciągów słów z początku posta.

Where to go? - Northern France

Since this is summer time and the holidays are lasting, with this post I’d like to initiate a mini series of several writings about my  favorite destinations in Europe – the regions or cities that had totally charmed me with their landscapes, atmosphere, cuisine and culture. The places where I often come back in my mind and I will surely visit again in reality. As the first one  I described the northern France – Normandy, Bretagne and the Loire Valley. Unfortunately, I had lost major part of the pics I took during that trip so I was forced to take the advantage of Uncle Google and the guidebooks I brought from France.

For the first time I headed to France in 2011. A second after landing on the Parisian airport I felt that special French atmosphere – everything started to happen more slowly with a moment I left the plane. When we mention France the first place we think about is Paris or the Blue Coast alternatively. Notwithstanding that, I caught the bus to the Loire Valley heading to Angers and only rode through the capital city.

Angers became our base for the time of the stay. That is a medieval city with the castle of seventeen towers situated right on the banks of Loire river. When it comes to the landmarks don’t skip the Museum of the Fine Arts and the parts of castle containing the largest medieval tapestry in the world. My absolutely best memory from Angers is degustation of the blue chocolate and visiting the manufacture where that unusual treat has been produced. Besides the color which is gained of fully natural ingredients, it’s famous for its special taste – inside the blue frosting there is a hard piece of caramel with nuts chips in it. According to my friend who has lived in Angers for whole his life the chocolates are the symbol of the blue tiles that used to cover all the rooftops in the city.

Staying in Loire Valley I had a chance to visit couple of incredible spots. One of them was the Mont Saint Michel hill. The legend says that abbey situated by the ocean on the verge of Normandy had been established by the bishop of the neighbor town who was visited by the Archangel Michael who told him to raise a monastery. In the course of time the place had started to transform into a fortress and then into a little town at the bottom of the abbey. During constructing, the builders didn’t foreseen the place where they worked gets completely separated from the mainland when the high tides come. Nowadays, Mont Saint Michel is a landmark of the UNESCO list which is the most popular place to be visited in France after Eiffel Tower and Louvre. Exactly 53 times a year during the strongest high tides the hill and mainland are linked with a narrow causeway only which is about a mile long.

W czasie potężnych przypływów, które mają miejsce dokładnie 53 razy w roku, opactwo i stały ląd łączy jedynie wąska grobla o długości około 1800 m.

Thankfully, I visited the place in April - during the summertime the abbey is attacked by the crowds of tourists. Though, I still think the view of the ocean from the terrace around the monastery is worth pushing around a bit. Another value of the place is the fact I ate there the best crepes ever. Those are extremely thin pancakes made of wheat flour and complemented by various additions (my favorites are the ones with a little bit of caramel on the top only).

The little town around the monastery is a place where you cannot stop thinking that, somehow, you find yourself in place typical for the fairytales (especially in the early evening when the little building around are lighted up). All the colorful shops, hotels and small restaurants opened in the buildings raised in the XV century, get more like from German adaptations of epic stories and legends while the daylight slowly disappears.

The day I left Mont Saint Michel I headed to sightsee Saint Malo – a town established in sixth century by a welsh monk. After six hundreds of years of existing the place gained the rights of a town and as time went by it became a start for all of the medieval journeys to North America. Completely destroyed during the second world war and then rebuilt town came to being a huge fish port and a popular destination for tourists. For me, it was a great spot to take a closer look on a bit cold and severe architecture of northern France while walking the never ending walls of the city and gigantic breakwaters.

Zniszczone podczas II wojny światowej, a następnie odbudowane, obecnie stanowi wielki port rybacki i ośrodek turystyczny.

I suppose this is the right place to tell you a bit more about the cuisine I could enjoy in Normandy and Bretagne. Despite the crepes I have already mentioned, I also tasted the famous galettes which are also the pancakes, though, made of buckwheat flour, mostly prepared salty. Those are often folded around the egg fried on ham.
In this region of France the cuisine is at an all-time high thanks to the availability of the large range of fresh product and adding red wine to almost every dish. There are 29 restaurants privileged with a Michelin stars in Burgundy only. Unfortunately, I had no time to taste the famous boeuf bourguignon, though, the coq au vin I tried there was the best I had ever had.

To chyba dobre miejsce, żeby wspomnieć o normandzkiej i bretońskiej kuchni.

I’m not going to write an elaborate about the particular chateaux sur Loire we visited. Each of them with their amazing history, architecture and gardens could be a topic for entire post and the one I’m writing right now is going to be the longest one on this blog anyway. I will tell you only about Chateaux d’Usse – that visit is a still strong memory in my mind. While driving there my friend recommended it to me as a castle of a Sleeping Beauty and got quiet. That turned out to be the most intriguing advertisement I had ever heard. I didn’t get disappointed that day – maybe that was the autosuggestion caused by Maximilien’s words but the castle seemed absolutely magical to me since the moment when we passed the entry gate.

The last place I will tell you about is the seaside city of Nantes. Like the other places in the region it’s filled with gorgeous landmarks like the Palace of the Dukes of Bretagne, though, I will present you an attraction that happens to has been in the guidebooks for a few years only – an elephant.

I had no idea what was going on when the family I traveled to Nantes with told me ‘we’re going to ride an elephant now’. It all was clear when we entered a huge hangar with a gigantic construction made out of 45 tons of wood an still shaped exactly like a 12 meters high and 8 meters wide animal. Imagine how impressive was that. I was pretty shocked when Max told me we were going to get to the inside of that wooden creature and have a ride. The Elephant of Nantes is a moving mechanism which takes up to 49 passengers for a stroll around the promenade. The distance of that walk is shorter than a kilometer, though, it takes around 45 minutes. There is a narrow balcony around the vehicle so we could admire the panorama of Nantes for whole the time of the journey. Beyond the elephant there is also more than ten other constructions in the museum – mostly shaped like an animal, all moving.

My description of the trip is coming to an end. The only thing I’d like to add is the fact that during my stay I didn’t spend a night in a hotel. I lived with the French families. Afterthought, I can quiet surely state that was the factor that made me memorize this trip in a best way. New friends showing us the spots in Angers we would never possibly find without their help, homemade kisch made for diner everyday (probably that is why I came back home a few pounds heavier), and tens of histories that you can’t find in any of the guidebooks – that is the reason why I stopped thinking of a hotel as the best place to stay in and I ensure you I will not even look at the hotel during my next trip to northern France. And that surely is going to happen one day because once you try the blue chocolate, you’re going to miss it sooner or later.
